World Green Roof Day

This year’s World Green Roof Day is scheduled for Monday the 6th of June and, as lovers of all things green and wild, we will be shouting our enthusiasm from the rooftops!

DID YOU KNOW – The true origins of green roofs began thousands of years ago with the most famous being the Hanging Gardens of Babylon, constructed around 500 B.C.

A green roof provides many benefits.

World Green Roof Day was founded by Chris Bridgman & Dusty Gedge; veterans of the sustainable living roof arena. The main objective of the day is to celebrate green roofs internationally and bring focus to the many benefits they offer to people and nature.

Green roofs are very much a part of the solution to the climate emergency, especially when considering the architecture of our cities.

Our own foray into green roofs began in 2006 and, since that time, our Wildflower Turf® Roof Turf has graced buildings at Peppa Pig World in Hampshire, University of Nottingham, Cliffs of Moher Visitor Centre, and Cardiff Castle just to name a few.

One of the most complicated green roof design projects that we have been involved with was Alder Hey Children’s Hospital in Liverpool, which opened in 2015. The turf was laid by installers using abseiling equipment and rope access – not a job for the faint-hearted!

But let’s not forget the many smaller-scale projects we have been involved with! It has been very gratifying to see independent homeowners embracing the concept of green roofs; our turf has even completed the roof of an urban home bike store!

A great, green addition to this urban bike store.

The pandemic has brought many changes to the way we live and work, with a greater propensity of people now working from home and a new appreciation for the importance of green and tranquil space. Garden rooms are becoming a popular option and Gary at Soulful Hideaways creates some gorgeous structures adorned with our very own Wildflower Turf®.

Gary and the Soulful Hideaways team design and forage from their workshop in Hertfordshire, creating retreats that are grown from locally sourced, reclaimed oak and crowned with a wild flower roof.
